THE STORY OF POMEGRANATE
Pomegranates, native to the regions of Iran and northern India, have gradually made their way into Vietnam’s agricultural landscape. While not as traditionally common as other fruits, pomegranates have been increasingly cultivated in Vietnam, particularly in the central and southern regions where the climate is conducive to their growth. Farmers have been attracted to pomegranates due to their high market value and health benefits, which have led to a growing demand both domestically and for export. As a result, regions like Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan have seen a rise in pomegranate orchards, with local farmers adopting improved cultivation techniques to boost yields.
In recent years, the Vietnamese government and agricultural experts have supported the expansion of pomegranate cultivation as part of broader efforts to diversify the country’s fruit production. Research into pest control, irrigation, and post-harvest technologies has helped improve the quality and shelf life of Vietnamese pomegranates. Though still a smaller industry compared to more established fruits, the pomegranate sector in Vietnam is showing promise, with increasing interest from international markets and a growing appreciation for the fruit’s nutritional value among Vietnamese consumers.
